"Nulla Dies Sine Linea: No Day Without a Line"

Kelli's Artist Statement:
Years ago, as i sat in a coffeehouse scribbling grim poems to purge myself of grief and doodling on scratch paper with a ballpoint pen, occasionally a stranger would notice my little designs and offer a kind remark. “that’s cool. you should do that bigger.” “you should do that in color.” inspired by these petals of encouragement, i began bringing colored pencils to the café and experimenting on real art paper, and the sporadic compliments i received emboldened me to continue. to my surprise, i felt my customary perfectionism slip away as i allowed the lines and colors to grow and play as they wanted, lifting not just my own spirits but sometimes those of the folks around me as well. the drawings you see here today are examples of those explorations. i hope they brighten your day.

Liz's Artist Statement:
From the time I was a child, I have made drawings everyday. Sketchbooks are my vade mecum. They are executed by a hand marinated in Western realist painting, bel canto draughtsmanship and embellished with a faux-naif aesthetic. My work transcends easy categorization. I delight in the whole zeitgeist of art-making. Drawing allows me to synthesize what seems incompatible and to realize an authentic, full-bodied reality. There is no contradiction for me to call myself a painter, a photographer, a graphic designer, printmaker, teacher and currently, a textile artist. There is no conflict for me to move from one means of expression to another because drawing is the foundation for all these media.
