Belmont Police Log, July 13-26: Package theft, man in truck asks 8-year-old if he wants to get inside, neighbor harassment and more

The following are excerpts from the Belmont Police log as made available by the Belmont Police Department. The log is public and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. ​

Sunday, July 15

2:05 p.m.: A Belmont resident renovating a home on broad Street said he received an email from someone about a month ago claiming they worked for the town of Belmont's Zoning Board. She told him he needed to wire money to the town for permits and compliance deposits. He wired $31,175 from his bank to the bank account provided by the woman. He recently visited Town Hall and discovered he wired the money to a fake account. He was told by the town that the woman who called him used to be an employee but no longer works for Belmont. He was advised to keep in contact with the town and his bank. 

7:25 p.m.: A man reported meeting a friend at 10 p.m. at A & R Market on Trapelo Road. He was attempting to sell him his cell phone but the man refused. They took an Uber to Porter Square in Cambridge where they smoked together. He left around 12:30 a.m. and returned home. Upon returning, he realized his cell phone was missing. He used a friend's computer to call the friend he met on Facebook. The friend denied having the phone. He said the friend has since changed the name of his profile and he does not know what it is. He checked Find My Iphone and saw that his phone was located at Star Market in Cambridge near Porter Square. There is a kiosk there that will buy stolen phones. He believes the firend took his phone and sold it. His phone is a 16E, 128 GB, back and was purchased last week. 

Tuesday, July 17

1:20 a.m.: A patrol officer observed a 2016 black Honda Accord traveling at a high rate of speed on Belmont Street near School Street.It then went through a red light without slowing down. The operator of the vehicle did not had a Dominican Republic driver's license, but did not have a Massachusetts driver's license. He said he has been living in Massachusetts for five years and the car he was driving is owned by his wife. He was issued a citation for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop/yield and speeding. His wife drove the vehicle home. He was issued a citation for unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, failure to stop/yield and speeding.

8:44 p.m.: A patrol officer observed a vehicle at the intersection of Cross and Lake Streets and learned the operator had a suspended driver's license and registration. His vehicle was towed and he was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and registration.

11:31 p.m.: Star Market reported a man who just stole goods. He walked into the store while it was closed, grabbed goods, walked out the door, got into his car and left. A construction worker in the area observed the white male push through the front sliding doors and enter Star Market. He observed him grab two packaged cake slices and tuck them under his arm and walk back out The construction worker took photos of the man and his vehicle and believes he spooked the man. The man is a Watertown resident. The Watertown Police said they would accompany the Belmont Police to the man's house to follow up on the investigation. The man told the police he was hungry and there was nowhere open to eat. He apologized and said he shouldn't have done what he did. He was charged with breaking and entering for misdemeanor and shoplifting by asportation.

Monday, July 20

2:02 p.m.: Officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries. A 2000 Lincoln collided with a 2014 truck at the intersection of Bright Road and Concord Avenue. The operator of the Lincoln had blood on his head, hands and shirt and a wound on his head that was not actively bleeding. He said he was traveling eastbound on Concord Avenue when he was struck on his passenger side by the truck. The operator of the other truck said he was stopped at the sign on Bright Road and Concord Avenue and waited until he thought he had a clear road and proceeded to take a left onto Concord Avenue when a vehicle traveling in the westbound lane of Concord Avenue slowed and waved him on. He did not see the Lincoln until it was directly in front of him and the collision took place. There was minor damage to the Lincoln, which was towed. The operator of the truck was issued a citation for failure to stop/yield.. The operator of the Lincoln was issued a citation for uninsured and unregistered motor vehicle.

Wednesday, July 22

1:15 p.m. Suspicious activity reported on Statler Road. A woman said a man dressed in a construction vest knocked on her kitchen door requesting access to her backyard. She said the man wanted to see her backyard because her neighbor was getting a fence installed. She called her neighbor and she said she was not installing a fence. She informed the man about what her neighbor said and denied his request to access her yard. The man left the area but she does not know what direction. She descried him as possibly Hispanic.

2:33 p.m.: A Belmont resident said her check was cashed by an unknown party. Her bank called her two times regarding her account. The first call was from a West Roxbury branch at 12:41 p.m. A branch manager informed her an individual attempted to cash a check of hers. The second call came from a Newton branch at approximately 1:31 p.m. A branch manager said an individual named Michael Buckley successfully cashed a check through her account. The check was made out to Belmont Dental Group for $68 and cashed for $3,410.36. She does not know the individual. She filed an affidavit of forgery with the bnak. She maled her checks on July 16 using at the mailbox located at the intersection of Pleasant and Brighton Streets across from Dunkin Donuts.

Thursday, July 23

5:57 p.m.: A Trapelo Road resident reported an Amazon package was partially opened. She believes someone opened her package in the front lobby of the building on Trapelo Road and looked through it. It contained two packs of batteries, q-tips, bandaids, lemon juice and two stool softeners. She said that one of the stool softeners was missing and she could not account for it. She was advised to contact Amazon regarding the package.

Sunday, July 26

5:02 p.m.: A woman said that on July 18, her eight-year-old son and his friend were asked by a stranger if they wanted to "get in the car." The eight-year old told the officer he and his friend were returning to his home from Town Field on Beech Street on their bikes after playing at the playground. They were at the crosswalk at Common by School Street when a red pick-up truck pulled up next to them, rolled down the window and asked them if they would want to get in the car. They continued riding their bikes. He said the white man was older with tan skin and white hair. He believes it was an older truck and that it went straight through the intersection towards Waverley Street. The mother of the eight-year-old boy who was involved in the incident confirmed the information given, adding the man may have had a white beard. The area was surveyed for camera footage but were unsuccessful in locating any.

8:43 p.m.: A Belmont resident reported harassment by her neighbor. She was woken up by her neighbor this morning who was screaming outside. He was sitting on a park bench by Waverley train station. She believes he was surveying and monitoring her whereabouts. He did not say anything to her. At 8:31 p.m., she was walking up Church Street heading home when she observed him again, pacing back and forth by Waverley train station. She contacted housing to try an dput security cameras outside her apartment.
