Debate between the three candidates in race for School Committee seat

School Committee Debate

Three candidates are running for the two open School Committee seats. They are Jung Yueh, Rachel Watson and Amy Zuccarello. 

On March 10th, the trio participated in a debate at Belmont Media Center for Belmont Journal moderated by former School Committee and Select Board member Anne Marie Mahoney.

In one hour, they each had the opportunity to share their candidate statements and answer nine questions related to their views on issues including the budget, superintendent, academic excellence, leveling the playing field and more.

A sneak peek at Belmont High's spring musical, "Mean Girls"

This year's Belmont High spring musical is "Mean Girls." This will be the first production to use the orchestra pit in the new auditorium.

Belmont Journal got a sneak peek at the production during one of the dress rehearsals.

The Belmont School Committee is happy to announce the superintendent finalist candidates, listed in alphabetical order:

Dr. Jill Geiser, currently Assistant Superintendent of Billerica Public Schools
Dr. Carlee Simon, former Superintendent of Schools Alachua County, FL

A closer look at the revised design for a new year-round rink and sports facility

Voters on April 4th are once again being asked to approve a debt exclusion question to help fund a new year round rink and sports facility.

This is the second attempt to get a debt exclusion for this project to pass. The first attempt was on the November 8th election ballot and it lost by 341 votes.

This time, the ask amount is less. The project has been reduced in size and scale and is estimated to cost $29 million, $4 million less than the original project that didn't pass in November.

Zoning Board Chair and Vice Chair announce they will be stepping down

Zoning Board Chair Nicholas Iannuzzi, Jr. announced he will be stepping down from his position as chair and as a member of the ZBA effective July 2023. His final meeting will be in June.

Iannuzzi has served on the ZBA for 16 years, since 2007 when he was first appointed. He has served as chair since 2017.

Following Iannuzzi's announcement, ZBA Vice Chair Jim Zarkadas said he, too, would be resigning effective July 2023. He was appointed to the ZBA 14 years ago in 2009 and has served as vice chair since 2017.

The Chelmsford Lions (11-7-3) came in ranked 23rd and knew it would be a tough battle against the higher ranked Marauders playing in Belmont. This was what is believed to be the final High School hockey game at Belmont's Skip Viglirolo rink and the Belmont team under Coach Tim Foley was determined not to disappoint the capacity crowd.

The Belmont Health Department is having a VaxxinateRX clinic for school-aged children on March 13th, offering the usual COVID and flu vaccines, as well as catch up vaccines for MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella), TDaP (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis), and Meningitis.

These vaccines are geared toward school-aged children who are missing one or more of these vaccines.

TDaP can also be useful for adults and seniors who haven’t had a tetanus containing shot in at least ten years. Especially if they are often around young children.

Belmont Woman's Club is hosting guest speaker who will talk about managing health issues at home

Every month the Belmont Woman's Club features a guest speaker. 

This month's speaker is Dr. Eugene Chan, founder and CEO of rHealth. He will talk about his innovative solutions that help many people manager their health issues at home.
