He received a phone call from a male who said he was from Coinbase, the company that holds his Bitcoin account. He told the victim the account was hacked and compromised. He believed the call was legitimate and followed the instructions from the male caller regarding his account to put his assets into the “safe” and was given an account number that was presumably for the “safe. He transferred $140,000 worth of Bitcoin to the account given. He was told the transfer was successful and the assets were now safe. The representative said he would get in touch with him soon and he was advised not to make any changes to his account until he received a call back. On May 7th, he became suspicious of the interaction and checked his accounts. They were all empty, showing zeroes. He was advised by representatives of Coinbase to file a report explaining the incident and they would attempt to recover the stolen Bitcoin.

6:12 p.m.: A Burnham Street resident reported his patio door window was shattered. His mother noticed a man walking near the patio at 2 p.m. when the window was intact. He described the man as a young Hispanic male, skinny build, 5-feet-8-inches tall, wearing a red or orange shirt. The neighbor had landscapers mowing the lawn near his patio window. He believes a rock may have got caught in the lawnmower and broke the window due to the patio lawn being covered in pebbles. He did not know if there was any security camera footage. Belmont Police asked the neighbor for the name of her contracting service. She provided a name and phone number.

Wednesday, Aug. 6

12:44 p.m.: A break-in reported by Waverley Place, 1010 Pleasant Street. The paper towel dispenser was off the wall in one of the bathrooms and placed upright on the counter next to the sink. The screw holes in the wall did not appear to be blown out or widened. There was feces in the toilet in the adjacent bathroom as well. The kitchen area of the suite had black marker in three spots on an overhead cabinet, the wall underneath the cabinet and the wall next to the cabinet.

The door was locked overnight and required badge access. The cleaners have access and come after personnel have left the building. They were advised to contact the cleaners to inquire if any damage was noted in the areas reported. The reporting party was concerned the door may not have been latched closed and that somebody off the street gained access into the building. He frequently observes suspicious individuals near the property sleeping on benches outside the building. He was encouraged to call McLean Security and request extra checks be made of the property after hours. Belmont Police will also monitor the area off hours.

6:17 p.m.: A Belmont resident reported an animal attack. He was walking his dog along Marsh Street when a woman he had previous interactions with in 2024 drove by and honked at him. He was concerned about this behavior as it startled his dog. He was unsure of the woman’s name, but knew she lived on Marsh Street. He previously called for an animal complaint against her as her dog had been aggressive and off leash. This evening at 5:55 p.m., he was walking his dog again on Marsh Street and saw the woman outside her home. He asked her not to honk at him while he was walking his dog. At that point, the same dog he reported in 2024 who was in the yard unsecured, ran at his dog and began to bite him. Another dog at the residence also ran at his dog but was chased away by its owner. The woman did not appear to make an attempt to secure her dog throughout the encounter. His dog sustained several bite marks, but not blood was drawn. The information will be forwarded to the Animal Control Officer. The dog owner also provided a video to be logged as evidence.

Friday, Aug. 8

5:16 a.m.: A School Street resident reported a break-in. He heard a noise in his driveway at 3 a.m. When he looked outside his bedroom window, he saw a man on top of his garage with a flashlight looking around the garage and backyard area. He believed the individual at the time was his second-floor neighbor. He then heard noises coming from the basement of his home while he was in the shower, which is directly above the basement window. He believes the individual gained entry into the basement through the window. He was still unsure if it was his neighbor, so he did not investigate. Hours later, he received a phone call from his wife, and she told him after reviewing the camera footage she believes the individual was not their neighbor, but an unidentified person. He will email the images captured on the Ring camera. The basement window appeared to be damaged, consistent with someone forcing it open to gain entry. Attempts were made to contact the second-floor resident, but he could not be reached. Nothing appears to be missing from the garage or basement at this time.
