Belmont Police Log, May 23-29: Several overnight car break-ins on Stony Brook Road Memorial Day weekend

The following are excerpts from the Belmont Police log as made available by the Belmont Police Department. The log is public and available for review. All persons are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law. 

Friday, May 23

9:14 a.m.: A Cross Street resident reported suspicious activity. She saw an older white woman in her driveway who she didn’t recognize. She was walking between the vehicles, fishing through her pockets, removing something and then leaving. The resident found what appears to be some type of wax paper in their watering can.

1:58 p.m.: Citizens Bank reported an individual attempting to pass a fake Bank of America check in the amount of $8,502.93 with a fake identification. He then wanted to withdraw $4,200 from an account that was not his, but he somehow obtained the account number. The teller alerted the branch manager who confiscated the fake identification and the fake check. The man said he was going to leave if the bank couldn’t complete the transaction and walked out the front door. The manager said she would provide the police with the video surveillance footage. The bank will contact the customer of the account he was attempting to withdraw from.

3:13 p.m.: A Belmont resident reported his Aventon electric bike stolen. It was locked to a bike rack near the middle school on May 20. On May 21, it was no longer there. The security lock was cut from the rack. Video surveillance footage of the bike being stolen was provided. The bike is worth $1,700. Detectives are investigating.

4;30 p.m.: A Cambridge resident reported receiving a threatening phone call from a blocked number labeled, “No Caller Id.” She answered, said nothing, heard nothing and hung up. The caller then called back. She heard breathing and then laughing and then a female voice who said in Korean, “You’ll be a dead woman, b..ch. She believes the woman is her ex-husband’s new girlfriend. She recognized the voice.

Saturday, May 24

1:25 p.m.: A Cambridge woman reported that while she was inside the Belmont Post Office on Concord Avenue, a bicycle drove into the back of her car. A witness informed her an older white male, wearing a sweatshirt, was doing a wheelie on the bike and crashed into the back of her vehicle. She said she did not see the incident but heard it. He fell over and when the witness asked him if he was hurt, he took off. There was minor damage to the left rear bumper of her car.

Sunday, May 25

2:50 a.m.: A Stony Brook resident reported suspicious activity. Two individuals dressed in black, one with a flashlight, were in his driveway.  A passenger door of a Toyota pick-up truck was ajar at a driveway further down the street. Belmont Police checked the area for suspects but did not locate anyone. A Massachusetts State Police K9 was also sent to the area to track for suspects. Nothing was taken from his two vehicles parked in the driveway. They were locked. The K9 had negative results on the track. Footage from the garage mounted camera shows the individuals walking between the cars.

2:50 a.m. While investigating an incident on Stony Brook Road, Belmont Police noticed a vehicle in a driveway on Spring Valley Road had the two passenger doors wide open. The vehicle was unoccupied, the console was open, and several items were scattered around the front driver’s area. It is unclear if any items were taken.

2:50 a.m.: While investigating suspicious activity on Stony Brook Road, Belmont Police officers noticed two passenger doors of a vehicle parked in the driveway of another Stony Brook Road were wide open. The vehicle was unoccupied, middle console and glove box open. Several items appeared out of place in the vehicle. It is unclear if any items were taken. The owner could not be reached.

2:50 a.m.: While investigating suspicious activity at a home on Stony Brook Road, Belmont Police learned three vehicles were broken into at another home on Stony Brook Road. The console and glove boxes were open. The resident believes loose change totaling approximately $5 was taken. The garage door was also open, but everything appeared to be in order. All the vehicles were unlocked when they were entered.

Monday, May 26

1:05 p.m.: An employee of a business on Leonard Street reported a customer dispute. The customer was provided services, which cost $150. She did not have money to pay and was attempting to contact her father who was supposed to pay. He was not picking up his phone. She said she lost her wallet and was unable to pay herself. The customer became irate and emotional, flipping over a table outside. Her father answered the phone and came to the scene to pay for her services. The customer was given a verbal no trespass order to the business and told she is no longer welcome.

5:38 p.m.: A blue Mini Cooper was stolen from a home on Wellesley Road. The homeowners left at 1:30 p.m. on May 23 and returned on May 26 at 5:30 p.m. The vehicle was unlocked, and the keys were inside. Sometimes family members use the car when they are away but always ask permission. She contacted multiple family members and some have not responded, but others said they did not use her car. Neighbors with cameras said they would review their footage.

Tuesday, May 27

10:23 a.m.: A Greybirch Park resident reported a motor vehicle break-in. The front passenger door was open. Nothing was taken. The car was locked, but there was no sign of forced entry. The Honda dealership informed the vehicle owner that they were having difficulty with perpetrators unlocking Honda’s vehicles electronically.

11:05 a.m.: A Payson Road resident reported two 10-foot sections of black metal decorative garden fencing stolen from his yard, valued at $45.

11:13 a.m.: Collision on Trapelo Road between a 2010 Lincoln operated by a Belmont man and a 2020 Hyundai operated by a Waltham man. The Belmont man stopped for a woman and a baby carriage crossing in the crosswalk when he was hit from the rear. The operator of the Hyundai was issued a citation for following too closely.

Wednesday, May 28

6:44 a.m.: Waverley Landscaping reported two trailers and a truck broken into. Equipment was left on the ground and a number of items were missing. A bolt cutter was found near one of the trailers, which the business owner believes was used to cut the locks. Seven chainsaws and four backpack blowers with no estimated value at this time were missing.

6:56 a.m.: Collision at the intersection of Belmont and White Streets between a 2017 Subaru operated by a Watertown woman and a 2023 Kia operated by a Waltham woman. The Watertown woman was issued a citation for failing to yield to oncoming traffic when turning left at an intersection.

7:33 a.m.: A Flanders Road resident who owns Preferred Electric reported 1,000 feet of MC wire worth $1,000 was stolen from his stairway/porch area. He received a notification that it was delivered by Standard Electric at 3:30 a.m. There were also two boxes of supplies with wire that were left behind. Cameras from numerous buildings in the surrounding area will be investigated.

5:52 p.m.: A Trapelo Road resident reported trespassing. The resident who has an expired Harassment Prevention Order against her neighbor, said the neighbor was on her side of the basement inspecting something in the ceiling without her permission. She said she would provide a video and was informed how to obtain a Harassment Prevention Order if she wishes to attempt to get one again.

9:05 p.m.: A Belmont resident reported a stolen license plate.

Thursday, May 29

9:53 a.m.:  A Colby Street resident reported someone went through his trash bin. His neighbor informed him that earlier that morning someone was ripping open his trash bags that were in the garbage bin on the curb. Noone else on the street had their trash bags ripped open. He was advised not to put any documents or letters with personal information in the trash.

10:44 a.m.: A Washington Street resident reported a dog climbed over a fence where she keeps three sheep on the Conversation Commission land at Rock Meadow. A woman with what appeared to be two “Pitty mixes” walked by the enclosed sheep area with two unleased dogs. One of them, black and white in color, ran into and climbed over the fence and into the pen. The sheep were unharmed and did not escape. The woman was able to gain control of the dog and lead it away from the area. She is concerned the fence was damaged and the electric portion of the fence, primarily for coyotes, was activated and not functioning properly after. She will provide photos to the Animal Control Officer.

9:45 p.m.: A Belmont resident reported attempted fraud. She received calls from 626-256-1249. She Googled the phone number and traced it to a travel agency called, Fareboom.com. When the phone rang again, she answered and spoke to a travel agent who said she was calling to confirm an international flight purchase for a name she did not recognize. The flight was from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to New York. The agent provided the last four digits of her credit card number, which did not match any of her own. She asked the agent to send an email with the information and he responded by asking her to confirm her identity. She refused and he hung up.

Arrest

A Belmont man was arrested for violating a restraining order on May 27 at 5:54 p.m.

Belmont Police responded to two domestic and six mental health calls between May 23 and May 30.
